At all of our shops we aim to provide top quality and great value wines through careful importing and an £8 Corkage policy. Find out more…

The Flag Tastings are back at Borough Market!
Come and taste a few wines with our wine expert every Wednesday from 6 to 9 pm.

all about us

Bedales is a family company born of the competition between two rival stallholders on Borough Market. The Cartwright and the Harrison decided to put aside their differences and work together for the common good. The Cartwrights were established importers of Saint-Emilion’s fine wines amongst others and the Harrisons also have a French love affair, importing wine and speciality food from the South West. They were joined shortly after by Arnaud Compas, bringing with him the Marseille connection. Arnaud’s experience and expertise has developed our wine selection until it’s bursting at the seams with exciting discoveries.

our policy

At Bedales we aim to provide top quality and great value wines through careful importing and an £8 Corkage policy. The simple thought behind what we do is to provide our customers with the opportunity to drink fine wines at reasonable prices. Our pricing is transparent and easy to understand. All of our wines are available at normal retail prices and if you want to drink a bottle in the bar, just add an £8 Corkage to the price. For example, an already great value bottle of Vintage Medoc at £60, can be enjoyed in our bar for £68 – easy! We have a wide range of wines at all prices and staff on hand who will happily help you make your choice, whether to drink in or take home.

our team

Arnaud Compas, our wine buyer and managing director is a passionate drinker (he hates to be called an expert), and has enthusiasm enough to share with the world. Arnaud has been ‘living’ wine since growing up near Burgundy and has compounded a natural love of wine with plenty of academic study and years experience in the trade.

Amy Harrison has learnt the trade here at Bedales and is now conducting regular and varied wine tastings. With the WSET Higher Certificate completed, the next stage is her Wine Diploma. To be started as soon as she can drag herself away from tasting and talking about all that lovely wine with customers!

our chairman and operations director

Stephen Harrison – one of the original traders on Borough Market, Stephen has been eating, drinking and importing products form the South West of France for many years. Nice work if you can get it! Plenty of anecdotes about truffle hunting with Kiki the pig, standing ankle deep in snow at vineyards in the Pyrenees and more…
Richard Cartwright - not only handles all the operational and logistical sides to the company, but also oversees the management of our Spitalfields branch. With Bedales since the beginning he is an invaluable member of the team.

Team Boro'

As mixed a group as you could hope to meet although heavily influenced by the French connection! Pascale, Carrie, Matteo, Tal and Mike. There are often new faces, but once here, it’s very hard to leave! You will also see more than the fair share of family members in and out of the shop, lending a helping hand where necessary…

Opening Hours: Mon:Closed, Tue:12-8.45pm, Wed/Thu:12-10.15pm, Fri:10am-10.15pm, Sat:9am-5.45pm
Last order is 45minutes before closing

team spit's

Noel, Kat, Didi, Edyta and Douglas are the team at Spitalfields. Having all been with us for a fair while, Kat and Didi since we first ventured over the river, they run an efficient and very friendly bar. Noel and Douglas are available to help customers select something to drink and the girls ensure a relaxed atmosphere.

team leadenhall

The friendly team at Bedales at Leadenhall is run by Debbie and her assistants Greg and Angela. Debbie loves the hustle and bustle of the City life and spending quality time with her daughter and family. Frenando, runs the kitchen, pulling from his 10 years worth of expereinece in this actual bar and makes the finest sandwiches in the City. Greg, Angela, Radek, Remi and Aganeiska are all waiting to meet you.

behind the scenes

As with any company, we have people working away who rarely come face to face with the customers. Martin and David Cartwright (shareholders) are often to be seen enjoying a bottle of something good in the bars and David also pulls a few Saturday shifts in the Boro Cellar, selling his beloved Saint-Emilions. Georgina Crawley (née Cartwright), along with her Dad Martin, handles our accounts and Pete Harrison (Stephen’s brother) watches over our computer type things.

joie de vivre

What gets us excited?
Travelling the world to discover new, fresh vineyards, finding wines through grandmother’s cellars, divorce lawyers or friends abroad. Having a shop where you can pick up and feel every bottle. Running the place like a car boot sale, where we have a stock of something interesting for a week and then it’s gone. Holding tastings where we can open anything from dusty Bordeaux to Central Otago.
What’s on offer?
Wines to drink now, older, interesting vintages such as Bordeaux 1970, 78,81,83… Stocks are small and the range changes weekly. The emphasis is on Italy, France, Spain and the rest of Europe… plus the likes of Lebanon and Morocco with a growing selection from cool climates around the world.
Where to finish?
Is to pay £8 corkage and drink any bottle you’ve just bought with some nibbles, charcuterie, and cheese.

you wont find these in threshers!

If you are looking for inspiration when it comes to wine then you won’t be disappointed at Bedales. Adventurous customers, new outlets and the addition of the bars in our shops has really given us the chance to spread our wine buying wings. That and Arnaud’s keen eye for quality and individuality. You will never find supermarket wines at Bedales and where you do see big brand names it will be a dust covered 1978 Glorioso Gran Reserva, for example. Our buying reflects our selling – an exploratory journey to discover wines that surprise, delight and inspire us all, whether for laying down for years, or drinking immediately in the bar.

wine continued

Understanding more about what you find on our shelves is easy. We search for two things: Firstly, perfect examples of the classic wines that will never go out of style. Secondly, winemakers who are really pushing the boundaries. Our buyer Arnaud has established his credentials in both areas time and again. A few years back he was heard saying he wanted the biggest range of Priorat in London. Then a passion for Kiwi Pinot’s overtook him and a constant love of the unusual from Italy and his home country of France has resulted in extensive ranges from both.

the finest charcuterie, antipasti and other delicacies

We see no reason not to treat our food sourcing with the same devotion to quality and individuality as wine. Once again we are heavily influenced by our French connections, serving cheeses and charcuterie from Le Marché du Quartier – Borough Market’s French food and wine stall. However, over the years we have also struggles our way through Tuscan olive picking trips and Andalucian style tapas tastings. Appearances of olive oil from Jordan and sun dried South African grapes take us out of Europe too. Additions such as the ever popular olive wood serving boards and hand thrown oil decanters complete the range.

private, tutored and corporate tastings

Thanks to the range of experience in our team, we are able to offer a variety of different evenings to suit everyone. Evenings can be tailored to suit you with food available including a selection of cheeses, charcuterie and antipasti as well as options to indulge in Foie Gras and other specialities.

  • Up to 35 people at Borough Market (Monday, Tuesday Wednesday)
  • Or 20 at Spitalfields, (Monday)
  • We are also happy to provide offsite corporate tastings if you have suitable premises.

private tastings

If you have some like minded friends who want to celebrate a birthday or special event with a wine tasting evening then give us a call!

  1. Cellar Tastings - The intimate atmosphere of our fine wine cellar is perfect for the more serious wine tasting. Open fine old vintages and rare wines accompanied by a selection of cheeses, foie gras, charcuterie and more. Evenings start at £40 per head.
  2. Larger Groups - These evenings often tend to be a little more informal, but again we can tailor them to the style you prefer. Taste between 6 and 8 wines served with a selection of nibbles including cheese, charcuterie and antipasti. Evenings start at £25 per head.

tutored tastings

As often as we can, we take the opportunity to welcome wine makers and suppliers to one of our stores to lead tutored wine tastings for our customers. These are nearly always ticket only events and sometimes organised at short notice so for the most up to date information about tutored tastings, please check the events page or e-mail tastings@bedalestreet.com and ask to be added to our mailing list. Events can be anything from superb old vintage Rioja Gran Reserve to our latest Argentinean and Chilean imports.

flag tastings

And for a bit of fun…
Wednesday nights can be difficult to enjoy, being not quite the weekend, but past the half way point. So to help out, we hold our ‘Flag Tastings’ every Wednesday from 5pm-9pm. Try 3 different wines, approx half a glass of each, with tasting notes and maps provided and widen your knowledge and experience of wine. Every fortnight the wines will change and there will be a staff member on hand to give you any further info you would like.

See our Events section for more information.

corporate tastings

An enjoyable, relaxed and relatively informative evening complete with plenty of top quality wine? Perfect for staff entertainment! As with all our tastings, we offer a wide range of styles for staff or client entertainment. Prices are charged per head and include at least 6 wines and a selection of our nibbles. For more information about themes, quizzes and layout for evenings, please get in touch

During an exploratory journey to discover wine from Australia, Bedales has developed a passion for the wines produced around Melbourne. These are the first releases from a new and exciting vineyard that is part of a revival of wine making in one of Australia's oldest wine growing areas where Swiss settlers first made wine in the 1870s: Sutherland Creek. rose 2006

Aromatic Cabernet Franc berry aromas dominate this wine. It has an attractive deep pink, almost red colour. 1st white 2005

With a mixture of over 4 white varieties in this wine you would expect an aroma with many facets. However, it is the fusion of Viognier and Pinot Gris aromas that dominate the wine at this stage. Honey dew-like fragrance is the result. The fruit fills the mouth leading to a crisp fresh finish. As an accompaniment to a picnic on a warm day, or just as a refreshing drink, would be ideal for this wine.

The good news is any one who can taste coffee or even worst a hamburger can relax…..taste wine. Aromas of wine help relax the human mind, according to a joint study conducted by Suntory and Kyorin University in Japan. The announcement was made at a meeting of the European Taste and Smell Society" in England on July 20 and 24, 2007. Halleloujah! It suit me perfectly. All required is a nose, taste buds and brain to interpret the information in emotion. The good news is any one who can taste coffee or even worst a hamburger can relax…..taste wine.

But having the ability to do something is different from knowing how to do it and applying this knowledge.

  • Becoming a competent taster is not that difficult. Half the bottle is knowing what to look for in a wine. It is not surprising that once you are "tuned in" to look for something, it is much easier to perceive, or rule out as not being present.
  • Once you understand the basic sensory properties of the style or type, and how these characteristics are related, then assessment becomes easier. The best way to learn these relationships is to experience them through tutored tasting or wine education classes, and by applying a systematic wine tasting method.

  • Wine tasting is not just like art, it is an art. It's very easy to learn the techniques of wine tasting, and if you already enjoy wine, learning the nuances will increase the pleasure.
    • First, you have to from an impression
    • Second, you have to communicate
  • There are NO wrong answers ! Everyone has their own perceptions, and there is usually a good reason if you come up with an aroma or a taste that no one else came up with. Go with your gut, and know that the more you taste, the more precise your responses will become. But justjustjust remenber that like every other critic, you have your own taste preferences that invevitably influence your perception, no matter how objective you try to be. Some people might not agree and it is when fun starts.

Unless you discover what you like, how can you ask for it.

our shopping basket

Bedales online shop is about as different an experience as our real shops are. We don't provide a long list of products for you to buy as we feel that the experience of attending one of our shops, getting some good advice and soaking in some of the atmosphere, is what we are really about.

However, occasionally we come across wines that need very little explanation, wines that stand out on their own.

We also understand our responsibilities when it comes to you making a online purchase, our Terms and Conditions listed below covers our commitment to you. We go further and offer you 2 options for paying for your purchases.

Firstly we have opted to use Paypal as our merchant provider to handle credit and debit cards. This means, we do not get access to your credit card details, giving you one less security layer to worry about. Secondly, we offer you the opportunity to call our shop to give your details to a real person rather than via the internet.

Lastly, just because we ask you to provide your details, doesn't mean you will be bombarded with emails and spam. If you join our mailing list, you will receive the odd newsletter or emailing about another fantastic offer. We wont pass on your details to any one else without your express permission, and you can un-subscribe at any time.
